Private Guitar lessons for Adults
Guitar and bass lessons catered specifically for adult learners. Whether you’re new to music, played some time ago, or still do, my lessons allow for a patient, relaxed and judgment-free environment, giving you the confidence and understanding to learn and grow further as an adult.
Both in person and online, my lessons are flexible and can adapt to your lifestyle and schedule
Is it too late to learn the Guitar?
In my experience teaching both privately and in schools, I have had the pleasure of working with people from all ages and walks of life. What stood out to me is the self deprecation of some adult learners, much more so than younger students. There seemed to be a stigma for adults that wanted to learn music later in life. which seemed to stem from the idea that it’s ‘too late’. If you’ve ever thought ‘I’m too old for this’ or ‘I should have started years ago’ - you’re not alone.
Contrary to popular belief, adult brains stay remarkably adaptable throughout life and the way adults learn (self-directed, drawing from real-world experience, motivated by interest rather than requirement) often makes them better suited to picking up an instrument than they realise.
The real barrier for most adults isn’t ability - it’s the self-consciousness of being a beginner again, especially after spending years being competent at a career or craft. That feeling is normal and it goes away. I want to create a space where students don’t feel judged and can enjoy taking whatever time they need to grow as musicians.
Beyond the music itself, learning guitar as an adult tends to bring some welcome side effects: better mood, lower anxiety, sharper focus and a built-in reason to meet other musicians and support your social life.
I’m Matt your teacher and partner on your musical journey. I’ve been playing and studying music for over 20 years and teaching for more than half that time, with a BA Hons in Music and a background in performing at UK festivals (Pub in the Park, Country Calling, Lakefest, The Big Feastival, Rising Roots) and supporting acts like Doves, Turin Breaks, The Lottery Winners and Brave Rival.
But more relevant than that: I got into guitar because I needed it - to build confidence and deal with social anxiety as a teen. That’s shaped my approach to teaching. No judgement, no rigid curriculum, no ‘‘you should be further along by now’’. Just lesson paced to you, built around music you actually want to play, on Acoustic, Electric or Bass guitar.
