Adragogy / Adult Learning

I want to debunk the myth that its too late for adults to learn something new. Adult brains process information and learn differently from a child’s brain. There is still plenty of neuro-plasticity in an adult brain, meaning it produces new neurons if exercised (neurogenesis), building entirely new neural pathways when you practice new tasks (1). It’s as simple as ‘‘Use it or lose it’’.

Adults taking on moderately challenging activities such as learning an instrument, tend to have better equipped neural networks for dealing with changes brought on by brain disorders (2). Mental acuity keeps the mind learning, which in tern helps maintain memory, attention span and problem solving skills as you age (3).

Not only does learning a new skill help you physically, but there is also a strong mental impact too. Research shows learning as an adult on your own terms can increase your sense of overall happiness, personal wellbeing, social engagement, confidence and purpose (4).

This is all to say: It’s not too late to learn something new and it will exercise your brain and body. I keep in mind my students are adults and have actual life experience, are self driven and have a readiness and motivation to learn.

This page is a non-exhaustive list of benefits and citations, there are heaps of studies showing the strengths and benefits of learning new skills as an adult, so no excuses - feel empowered!
